Another food item near and dear to my stomach and mouth is herbs and spices. I just can not do without these best flavor enhancers in my foods. McCormick is a company that goes out of their way to help us take those plain and boring foods and change them into foods that delights the mouth. So here is a list of all the wonderful herbs and spices that they provide.
Most people, when they use ginger it is usually in savory dishes or sweet desserts, to make them taste more yummy, but did you know that ginger has other benefits for us? Well, here is a list of other reasons to use ginger: it may reduce soreness and muscle pain, it has anti-inflammatory effects, it may lower blood sugar, it can help treat chronic indigestion, as well as help lower cholesterol levels, and it may even help prevent cancer. Here’s a spice that will knock your socks off and put them back on. It adds lots of zip to every dish from chili to Mediterranean food dishes. This is a herb that can be added to chicken, potatoes, lamb, roasted vegetables and to tomato sauce to add flavor. Other great qualities of rosemary is that it has vitamin B-6, calcium and iron. Plus, it does great things for your body, such as improving digestion, providing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, and it may also prevent brain aging, to name a few things.
Basil is a herb that is sweet and fragrant, great on chicken, pork, seafood and pasta and it has some wonderful other benefits. It is rich in vitamins A,K, and C, and provides iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Other goody’s it has for you are antibacterial properties, it’s high in antioxidants, reduces swelling and inflammation, has anti-aging properties, reduces oxidative stress, and fights cancer as well as many other great things. And I thought it was just great in pizza!
Time (Thyme) to check out this herb. It has many uses besides putting it in all types of dishes that it is great for. Say, like spaghetti sauce. What are the things it is good for? They are: lowering blood pressure, helping to stop coughing, boosting your immunity, disinfecting, getting rid of pests, smelling good (potpourri anyone?) and boosting your mood. I thought it was just great in food!
Here it “Cumin” again. What is so great about this herb? For one, you can add this to soups, stews, vegetables and meats to increase the flavor. Some of the health benefits from this herb they are that it may help with weight loss and digestion. It is rich in iron, may help in reducing bad cholesterol, and may help with diabetes as well. Let’s spice things up a bit – say in dessert like cookies, cakes and fruit pies. Allspice seems to be great for this use. What else does it do for you? It great getting a night sleep, helps maintain blood pressure, can help fight infection in your body, keeps hair and skin looking good, is good for brain functions and healthy blood counts, plus it helps with making you feel more energized. After learning all this, I am going to load on the allspice in my desserts.

What are the benefits of cinnamon for our bodies? Well, here are just a few of them: it is high in antioxidants, relieves inflammation, improves heart health, may help with reducing cancer risk and there are many more benefits, so you may want to sprinkle some extra cinnamon in your food. I know I will.
Now here’s a herb that packs a good health punch and has Vitamins A,C,E, and K. It also provides the following minerals: iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. What about health benefits? Here a few of them: It can help prevent urinary tract infections, rid the body of heavy metals and lower blood sugar levels. The next time I am making Mexican or Chinese foods I will be putting some more cilantro in them.
Here’s one for ya – a herb that’s not only great for seafood, homemade pickles and spreads, but has great health features too. It can help prevent insomnia, maintain healthy bones, prevent excess gas (thank goodness – no more farting all day,) calm hiccups, (great – I hate hiccups.) That’s some things for you to think about when you use dill weed in your food.
